If you’re a new patient, you’ll fill out a medical history form. This isn’t just admin\u2014it’s a crucial part of your care. No question is too small\u2014if you’ve noticed bleeding gums, sensitivity, or a clicking jaw, or just want to improve or enhance the appearance of your smile, now is the time to mention it.<\/p>\n Once you’re comfortable in the chair, the dentist begins a \u2013 comprehensive dental examination<\/p>\n Before looking inside your mouth, the dentist will gently feel the areas around your jaw, neck, and under your chin. They’re checking for:<\/p>\n This is part of your oral cancer screening\u2014a quick, painless check that takes less than a minute but is vital for early detection.<\/p>\n Using a small mirror, probe, together with photographs, and any necessary radiographs (x-rays) , dentist\/oral health therapist looks at:<\/p>\n This step often surprises patients, but it’s one of the most important things. Using a small, measuring probe, your dentist or oral health therapist gently measures the space between your gum and each tooth. These measurements (called pocket depths) tell us whether your gums are healthy or showing signs of gum disease.<\/p>\n X-rays aren’t always taken at every visit. Your dentist will recommend them based on your individual risk, any symptoms, or how long it’s been since your last dental X-rays.<\/p>\n X-rays are necessary to assess your dental health :<\/p>\n Modern digital X-rays use very low radiation and are considered safe. If you’re pregnant, let us know\u2014X-rays can often be deferred.<\/p>\n Professional teeth cleaning is generally complete twice a year unless otherwise advised by your treating clinician. When done regularly, cleans are an easy and pain-free part of the dental appointment.<\/p>\n The first step of cleaning at Dental Clinique involves the application of a plaque disclosing dye. This allows the Oral Health Therapist to accurately identify where debris is located on the teeth to facilitate efficient and comfortable cleaning. An air-flow\u2122 is then used to gently clean off any plaque and new calculus (hardened plaque) through a fine spray of pumice and water. The ultra-sonic scaler is then used to remove any remaining calculus from both beneath and above the gum line as required.
