This is your time to ask questions. No question is too small—if you’ve noticed bleeding gums, sensitivity, or a clicking jaw, or just want to improve or enhance the appearance of your smile, now is the time to mention it.

Step 1 – The Oral Examination

Once you’re comfortable in the chair, the dentist begins a – comprehensive dental examination

Extra-Oral (Outside the Mouth) Exam

Before looking inside your mouth, the dentist will gently feel the areas around your jaw, neck, and under your chin. They’re checking for:

Swollen lymph nodes (which can indicate infection)

Jaw joint (TMJ) tenderness or clicking

Any lumps or asymmetry

This is part of your oral cancer screening—a quick, painless check that takes less than a minute but is vital for early detection.

Intra-Oral (Inside the Mouth) Exam

Using a small mirror, probe, together with photographs, and any necessary radiographs (x-rays) , dentist/oral health therapist looks at:

Soft tissues: Lips, cheeks, tongue, floor of mouth, roof of mouth, tonsil area. They’re checking for any red or white patches, ulcers that haven’t healed, or unusual lumps. This is the second part of the oral cancer screen.

Gums: Colour, swelling, bleeding points, and recession.

Teeth: Cavities, cracks, wear patterns, and the condition of any existing fillings or crowns, and mobility (loose teeth)

Bite and alignment: How your teeth come together when you close your mouth. Jaw alignment issues can lead to tooth wear, headaches, or TMJ problems.

Assessment of missing teeth and the impact that is having on your overall dental condition

Aesthetics/cosmetics together with you as the patient, discussing any areas (if any) you would like to improve

Gum Health Assessment (Periodontal Screening)

This step often surprises patients, but it’s one of the most important things. Using a small, measuring probe, your dentist or oral health therapist gently measures the space between your gum and each tooth. These measurements (called pocket depths) tell us whether your gums are healthy or showing signs of gum disease.

1–3 mm: Healthy gums

4 mm or more: May indicate gingivitis or periodontitis

We may also check for bleeding, mobility of teeth, recession. NOTE: Healthy gums don’t bleed. If yours do, it’s a sign of inflammation/infection

Step 2 – X-Rays (If Needed)

X-rays aren’t always taken at every visit. Your dentist will recommend them based on your individual risk, any symptoms, or how long it’s been since your last dental X-rays.

X-rays are necessary to assess your dental health :

Cavities between teeth that aren’t visible to the naked eye

Bone levels around teeth (important for gum disease assessment)

Tooth roots and surrounding structures

Abscesses or cysts

Modern digital X-rays use very low radiation and are considered safe. If you’re pregnant, let us know—X-rays can often be deferred.

Step 3 – Professional Teeth Cleaning (Scale and Clean)

Professional teeth cleaning is generally complete twice a year unless otherwise advised by your treating clinician. When done regularly, cleans are an easy and pain-free part of the dental appointment.

The first step of cleaning at Dental Clinique involves the application of a plaque disclosing dye. This allows the Oral Health Therapist to accurately identify where debris is located on the teeth to facilitate efficient and comfortable cleaning. An air-flow™ is then used to gently clean off any plaque and new calculus (hardened plaque) through a fine spray of pumice and water. The ultra-sonic scaler is then used to remove any remaining calculus from both beneath and above the gum line as required. This procedure generally takes between 20-30 minutes, and we can adjust the temperature of the water used for added comfort.

Depending on your personal treatment needs, we may recommend a fluoride treatment to the teeth. – It helps strengthen tooth enamel, making teeth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque and sugars, which reduces the risk of tooth decay.

Step 4 – Discussion and Next Steps

Once your exam and clean are complete, your dentist will talk you through their findings.

They’ll explain:

What’s looking healthy

Any areas of concern (cavities, gum issues, wear)

Recommended treatment, if any

When to come back (usually six months, sometimes sooner depending on dental health)

This is your opportunity to ask questions. it is important you are part of the decision-making process.

What We’re Looking For Beyond Cavities

A modern dental check-up goes well beyond looking for decay in your teeth. Here’s what else we’re monitoring:

Oral cancer: Early detection saves lives. We check every patient at every check-up.

Gum disease: Often silent until advanced. Regular pocket measurements track changes.

Jaw alignment (TMJ): Grinding, clenching, or bite issues can cause headaches, tooth wear, and muscle pain.

Tooth wear: From grinding, acid reflux, or aggressive brushing.

Changes in existing work: Old fillings or crowns can break down over time.

Airway and breathing: In some cases, we look for signs of sleep-disordered breathing like snoring or grinding.

For Nervous Patients – How We Help

If you’re anxious about dental visits, know that you’re not alone—and there are many ways we can make the experience more comfortable.

Tell us: We’ll listen and tailor our approach.

Go at your pace: We can explain everything before we do it, and you can raise a hand to pause at any time.

Comfort options: Some patients benefit from sedation options (discussed in advance).

Bring a support person: You’re welcome to have someone sit with you during the appointment.

Headphones: Feel free to bring your own music or audiobook.

Our goal is to make your visit as relaxed as possible.
