Crowns are used to restore teeth that have been chipped, fractured, or badly worn down. They can also cover large fillings or protect teeth that have had root canal treatment. The purpose of a crown is to help restore a tooth’s shape and size, while supporting its strength and form.
There are several reasons a crown may be recommended. These include repairing fractured teeth, protecting weak teeth from further damage, and restoring teeth where there is not enough natural tooth left. Crowns can also be used to cover teeth that are badly discoloured or misshapen or to support a bridge. The most common type of crown is made from a strong porcelain material, which is designed to provide durability and a tooth-like appearance. Crowns can also be made from other materials such as gold. This choice of material depends on factors like the tooth’s position, the colour and shape of surrounding teeth, how much of the tooth shows when you smile, and how the tooth functions.
Fitting a crown usually requires two appointments. During the first visit, the dentist will prepare the tooth by shaping it to fit the crown. A mould or digital scanning will then be taken and sent to a laboratory to create the custom crown. While the permanent crown is being made, a temporary crown will protect the tooth.
Crowns are designed to last many years but can sometimes come loose, form a cavity underneath the crown or need replacing if not well maintained. Maintaining good dental hygiene and regular check-ups help to ensure the crown and surrounding gums stay healthy.
As with any dental procedure, there are potential risks associated with crowns. These may include temporary sensitivity, discomfort, or a reaction to materials used. In some cases, further treatment may be needed if the tooth or surrounding area does not respond as expected. Your dentist will discuss these risks and answer any questions before proceeding with treatment.
