Dental Dentures

A denture is a removable appliance made to replace natural teeth, either completely or partially. Dentures stay in place by the suction created by saliva and by attaching to adjacent teeth and soft tissues. While dentures are a cost effective tooth replacement method and can restore your ability to bite and chew, they do not fully match the efficiency of natural teeth. In some instances, denture adhesives are sometimes required to help secure a denture, reduce movement, and support the gums by cushioning pressure points.

Proper denture hygiene is essential. Dirty dentures can develop deposits like food particles, stains, tartar, and plaque, which can cause unpleasant odours and harm gums and any remaining teeth. Developing a cleaning routine helps maintain denture hygiene. Rinse dentures after every meal to remove debris, and brush them with a soft brush, denture cleaner, and warm water. Always clean dentures over a basin with water to prevent damage if they are dropped. Brushing is vital, as soaking alone is not enough to remove plaque and stains. Use a non-abrasive denture paste and pay special attention to crevices and any metal parts in partial dentures. For dentures made of metal and plastic, rinse after meals and brush with soap and warm water. Avoid soaking in harsh cleaners or household products. You may be required to remove your dentures overnight to maintain gum health.

Tartar buildup can occur on dentures and requires professional cleaning by your dentist or dental laboratory.
