Mouth cancer is becoming more common, but with early detection, the chances of successful treatment and recovery are much higher. That’s why regular screening is an important part of your ongoing dental care.
A mouth cancer screening is a quick and simple check carried out as part of your dental examination. It involves observation of the soft tissues inside and around your mouth to check for any unusual changes. These screenings are a vital way to catch any early signs of disease.
During your appointment, we will review your medical and oral health history to identify any risk factors. We will then carefully examine your lips, cheeks, tongue, the roof of your mouth and the floor of your mouth. The outside of your neck and jaw will also be checked for any unusual lumps or swelling. In some cases, a handheld light or scanning device may be used to highlight areas that need a closer look.
If anything looks unclear or unusual, we may refer you to a specialist for further checks. It is recommended to have a screening once a year, or more frequently if you have risk factors such as smoking, heavy alcohol use, or a history of oral lesions. If you notice persistent sores, ulcers or patches in your mouth, it is important to get them checked.
Early detection saves lives. Mouth cancer screening is a simple step that gives you peace of mind and helps protect your long-term health.
