Root canal treatment (endodontics) is carried out when the nerve inside a tooth is damaged or becomes infected. It is a treatment that may save a damaged or infected tooth, relieve pain, and preserve your natural tooth. If an infected nerve (pulp) is not treated, it may develop into an abscess, which can cause facial swelling and severe pain.
A root canal appointment typically includes diagnostic imaging, local anaesthetic, and meticulous removal of infected tissue, followed by thorough cleaning and sealing of the root canals.
Once the root canal filling has been completed successfully, a full coverage crown or onlay is typically recommended, and the tooth can remain in function for many years.
Root canal treatment is generally safe, but like any dental procedure it carries some risks, such as discomfort or swelling after treatment, a small chance of infection, or the need for further treatment. In rare cases, complications can occur around the tooth or surrounding tissues. Our dentists will explain these risks and answer any questions before you decide on treatment.
