Sinus Elevation

A sinus elevation is a type of bone grafting procedure that focuses specifically on the upper jaw, in the area of the premolars and molars. It is typically required when there is not enough bone height in the upper jaw to place dental implants, or when the sinuses are positioned too close to an implant site.

When upper posterior teeth are lost, the bone in that area naturally begins to shrink over time. Additionally, the sinus cavity, which lies above the upper jaw, can expand into the space left behind. This reduces the available bone and can make implant placement difficult. A sinus elevation addresses this issue by adding bone between the jaw and the sinus floor, effectively lifting the sinus membrane and creating enough space for a secure implant.

Before the procedure, diagnostic imaging such as panoramic radiographs or CBCT scans will be carried out to assess the structure of the sinuses and plan the treatment. The bone used in a sinus elevation can come from the patient’s own body, a donor source, or synthetic materials. The appropriate material will be chosen based on your specific needs.

Sinus Elevation

A sinus elevation is performed under anaesthesia and involves opening a small window in the bone, gently raising the sinus membrane, and placing the bone graft material underneath. The area is then left to heal, which typically takes several months before implants can be placed. Sometimes, depending on the volume of bone available in the site, a smaller sinus elevation procedure can be performed at the same time as implant placement.

This procedure enables successful implant treatment in patients who otherwise would not have been suitable candidates due to limited bone volume in the upper jaw. It is a well-established and clinically proven technique that contributes to long-term implant success.
