Tooth Extractions

Tooth extractions are a common dental procedure which may be needed when a tooth cannot be saved. Many people experience an extraction at some stage in their lives.

Teeth can require removal of a number of reasons, including decay, severe gum disease, infection and severe cracks. Wisdom teeth can also sometimes require removal due to inadequate space or damage to adjacent teeth and structures. Extractions may also be recommended before orthodontic treatment to help create space and improve alignment.

Prior to removal of a tooth you will be administered some local anaesthetic. This means that the tooth and the area around the tooth is numbed prior to being gently and precisely removed. In some cases, especially for more complex removals or anxious patients, general anaesthetic may be required. At Dental Clinique, we have two onsite operating theatres where this can take place under the care of a specialist anaesthetist.

After tooth removal, you will be given all of the appropriate post operative care instructions and any necessary pain relief by your treating dental surgeon.

Understanding the risks

Tooth extractions are common but carry some surgical risks, such as pain, swelling, bleeding, infection, delayed healing, or damage to nearby teeth, bone, or nerves. Dry socket can also occur and cause discomfort. Our dentists will explain these risks, how they are managed, and your aftercare so you can make an informed decision.
