Wisdom teeth typically appear between the ages of 17 and 25.
When a wisdom tooth does not have sufficient space to erupt fully, it can become trapped under the gum. This is known as impaction. Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to swelling, soreness, and sometimes infection. You might notice difficulty opening your mouth, a bad taste, or discomfort when chewing near the area. Good brushing and rinsing with warm salt water can help reduce inflammation, and your dentist may recommend antibiotics if an infection has developed.
If your dentist advises removal, the procedure is usually done under local anaesthetic. General anesthetic may also be offered if you are feeling anxious. The area will be completely numbed, and in some cases, a small incision is made in the gum to access the tooth.
Any necessary pain relief will be provided by your dental surgeon, and typically regular salt water rinses can help keep you comfortable as you heal. If you smoke, cutting down or stopping will improve healing and reduce the risk of complications.
Our team will guide you through every step and ensure you feel calm and supported throughout your treatment and recovery.
